Reflection/Critical Angle Problem?
A jeweler must decide whether the stone in Mrs. Smith’s ring is a real diamond or a less-precious zircon. He measures the critical angle of the gem and finds that it is 31.3°. Is the stone really a diamond or just a good imitation? (Ndiamond = 2.41, Nzircon = 1.92)
So I have an answer for this problem, but I’m almost positive that I did it incorrectly… Anyone care to show me how to get through this problem correctly?

You imagine light passing from the diamond into the air. In general if it hits the surface at angle “a” , it will be bent toward the surface (away from the surface normal) at angle “b” as it leaves. Angles are measured from the surface normal.
Then apply Snell’s law of refraction, using N=1 for air;
NSin(a) = Sin(b)
The critical angle is found by letting b = 90 deg. So the light leaves skimming the surface. This will correspond to an incident angle “a” called the critical angle;
NSin(a) = Sin(90) = 1
Sin(a) = 1/N
For Diamond N= 2.41
Sin(a) = .415
a = 24.5 deg This is the critical angle for Diamond, So the stone is not Diamond.
If you try N=1.92 you will get a critical angle of 31.3 deg. So the stone is Zircon.
