Questions about doves as pets…?
I saw what looked like a miniature pigeon in a pet store in with finches. It had orange rings around its eyes, so from what I found online I think it was a diamond dove. Are these the same as turtle doves? I am looking for a kind of pet bird that is pretty low maintenance and these are gorgeous. Would you recommend them as pets? Is it a good idea to keep a pair of females? Are they awfully loud, smelly, or fragile?
Turtle doves are mostly not the same as diamond doves. There are at least five different species of birds called turtle doves, all members of the genus Streptopelia. The diamond dove is Geopila cuneata, a completely different genus. But just to confuse matters, the diamond dove is also known as the “Little Turtledove”, so… it technically isn’t a turtledove, but it’s sometimes called one.
