1ct Diamond Solitaire Ring Questions
Victorian Jewellery Prices?
I’ve been trying to find out what jewellery prices were around 1850 in the UK, but have had no luck (unless you’re talking something like the Hope Diamond, which is way out of the league of what I had in mind).
Can anyone estimate what a 1ct and 2ct flawless diamond solitaire ring might have been bought for around that time, or link me to a site that might have some victorian jewellery and their original prices, please?
“Before the 20th century, other types of betrothal gifts were common. Before the end of the 19th century, the bride-to-be frequently received a sewing thimble rather than an engagement ring.[1] This practice was particularly common among religious groups that shunned jewelry. Engagement rings didn’t become standard in the West until the end of the 19th century, and diamond rings didn’t become common until the 1930s.[1] Now, 80% of American women are offered a diamond ring to signify engagement.[1]”
You might try looking at microfilm newspapers of that time but I suspect you won’t find many ads for diamond rings.
